National Show Critique

The Judge for the 13th National Cocker Spaniel Show was Ms Joanna Darby (Classicway Kennels, UK).

Class 1 Baby Puppy Dog (AOC)

  1. Gooding’s YUNBEAI MAN OH MAN

5 months on the day, very attractive blue with lovely head and expression, very cockery in body – short coupled and well ribbed. Well boned and best of legs and feet. Moved well. A very promising baby with a bright future. Best Baby in Show.

  1. Burbridge’s ASHMERE VIVA LAS VEGAS

4 month old blue. Typical head, good neck and shoulder, excellent legs and feet, sound fore and aft.

  1. Burbridge’s ASHMERE ALL NIGHT LONG

My notes say that this one was very similar in type to 2nd and the catalogue confirms that they are litter brothers! Loved the head on this one, on the day his movement was not quite so positive but a lovely pair.

  1. Hughes’ JYNDEL I’M SOOOO SPECIAL

Beautifully presented blue in good condition. Good head, neck and shoulders. Well ribbed and good hind quarters. A little loose in front movement but I would not be concerned at this age.

  1. Hughes’ JYNDEL SPECIAL I AM

Litter brother to 4th I now know, and similar remarks apply, just preferred head of 4th.

Class 1 Baby Puppy Dog (Solid)

  1. Casbolt’s MORNINGDALE THE TAN MAN

Attractive 5 month black and tan with a good head and excellent neck and shoulders which won him this class. Well ribbed body and good quarters. Needs to strengthen in pastern.

  1. Wade’s MURRANGOWAR TOOTIMER

Well grown red, nice head and eye, good bone and well ribbed body. Excellent hind quarters.

  1. Douglas’s BATHGATE RIFF RAFF

Well coated red also 5 months old and still learning his trade! Pleasant head for his age, OK body properties but not the lay of shoulder of those that were ahead of him today.

Class 2 Minor Puppy Dog (AOC)

Only 2 in this class but both quality puppies.

  1. Burbridge’s ASHMERE SHARP DRESSEDMAN

81/2 month dark blue. Good head and expression, good neck and shoulders. Moved well but can lose his top line if moved too quickly. Lovely bone and substance.

  1. Dennis’s PENCANDY SOME LIKE IT HOT

Lovely headed elegant light blue. Sound in all departments – just lacked body and rib on the day but one to watch for the future.

 Class 3 Puppy Dog (AOC)

  1. McFadden’s GLENBRIAR FLAGSHIP BLUE

11 month blue with good head and expression and excellent neck and shoulders. Short cockery body properties and good hind quarters. Front movement was erratic today but won on maturity and body on the day.

  1. Butterfield’s MIJOJUKA TEDDYWADDY

Only 61/2  months and giving away a lot in maturity but a good type. Head still needs to develop, OK neck and shoulders, good legs and feet and very sound. Slightly longer in the loin than 1.

Class 3 Puppy Dog (Solid)

  1. Heatlie’s WINLINES YOU’RE THE ONE I WANT

Very masculine red. Good head, well balanced throughout, good neck and shoulder and lovely bone. Well ribbed and excellent hindquarters. I think he will have a bright future and will look better in junior than puppy.

  1. Stitcher’s MANUNGA MUSKETEER

Cockery black in excellent condition. Head Ok with pleasing expression. Well ribbed for his age, very good coat. Moved well.

  1. Rochester’s ADJOBI TIME TO REFLECT

Lovely headed deep red with good legs and feet. Short and cobby but does not have the neck and shoulder of 1 and one of a few today with a high tail carriage.

Class 4 Junior Dog (AOC)

Very good class of high class young stock

  1. Royoni Kennels’ ROYONI LOOK OUT FOR ME

Difficult not to look out for this one as he has such natural ring presence. Beautifully headed blue with excellent neck and shoulders, short and cobby body with great hind quarters. Moved very well behind using short hock to really drive – can “pin” slightly in front. Lovely legs and feet, well presented and handled. Looked the finished picture.

  1. Royoni Kennels’ ROYONI  LOOK FOR ME

In some ways I did prefer this dog to 1st and it was a tough decision – I had no idea of any connection only to discover that they are litter brothers! Good masculine head and well made throughout. Good neck and shoulders, well ribbed, short body and fabulous quarters. Very sound in both directions and full of cocker character which threatened to get the better of his handler on occasion. A lovely pair.

  1. O’Keefe’s WORLEWOOD OVER THE MOON

Another of excellent type and quality. Fabulous head, good neck and OK shoulders, moved soundly on the best of legs and feet. Just needed a little more body today to complete an otherwise lovely picture. Well presented.

  1. McFadden’s GLENBRIAR WIZARD OF OZ

Good type of blue, masculine head, good expression, well bodied and in excellent condition, good legs and feet, moved well.

  1. Gooding’s YUNBEAI I’M IN STYLE

Light blue, not the head quality of some higher up in this class, but lovely neck and shoulders, short coupled and moved well when settled. Well presented.

Class 4 Junior Dog (Solid)

All of these carried their tails with a little too much enthusiasm today, so I ignored this in my placings.

  1. Young and Love’s KOKELONE KOLD KASE

Masculine red in good coat. OK head and eye, good neck and shoulder, nice bone and well ribbed. Moved well. Well balanced quality dog.

  1. Finister’s NIGHSAIL BLACK ECHO

Beautiful headed young black, elegant and very merry, not the substance of 1st.

  1. McIntyre’s MALEANDA SPIRIT LAD

Masculine black with lots of bone and substance, well ribbed and good quarters. Head could use a bit more work to balance. Moved OK.

Class 5 Intermediate Dog (AOC)

  1. Kingston & Clarkson’s AUST CH KINGSWAY TOUCH OF FROST

Quality blue of lovely type and conformation. Excellent head with that correct cocker expression. Well made throughout – well laid shoulders, balanced into a short back with good topline and super legs and feet. Moved really well.

  1. Jones & Job’s AUST CH DOULTON MATINEE IDOL

Very stylish blue who gave 1st a run for his money in this class! Well made throughout, lovely bone, moved well on good legs and feet. Would have preferred a few pounds less in weight today.

  1. Hatherly’s  AUST CH BELLEBRIAR BOUNTY

Blue with correct head and eye, well ribbed body, good topline and excellent legs and feet. Moved well

Class 5 Intermediate Dog (Solid)

  1. Britebay Kennel’s  AUST CH BRITEBAY BLACK DEVIL

Loved this kennel’s cockers and this black was no exception. Really well made, cockery from his pleasing head and expression, correct front confirmation, short cobby body to his lovely bustling movement. A real cocker, he was unlucky to meet the blues in the challenge on such good form.

  1. Heatlie’s MISTDUKE CLASSIC BLACK

Different type of black from 1st. Pleasing head, well ribbed body and good quarters. Not the legs and feet of 1.

  1. Mellet’s CANYON CLASSIC STAR

Nice headed golden with good neck and shoulders in beautiful condition with a natural top coat.

Class 10 Australian Bred Dog (AOC)

A good class of quality particoloureds

  1. Love, Zucker & Hutt’s  AUST CH NORTHCOATE TIME MACHINE

Quality blue, fully mature with correct neck and shoulders, well made front, excellent quarters and great movement.

  1. McFaddens’ AUST CH GLENBRIAR PARTY TRICK

Very merry blue with a fabulous expression, good neck and shoulders, nice legs and feet and good top line. This was just slightly detracted from by a little over enthusiastic use of his tail on the move.

  1. Royoni Kennel’s  AUST CH ROYONI LOVE ME TRUE

Attractive black and white. Gorgeous head and eye, excellent neck and shoulders giving an elegant outline whilst still being short in the loin. Good quarters, moved well.

  1. Markotany’s AUST CH BOLWARRA PRETTY BOY

Really lives up to his name! A delightful orange with a lovely head and eye that I found lacking in some of the other oranges today.  OK neck and well laid shoulders, good front and well developed hind quarters.

  1. Bellamy’s BELLROFT BOYHOOD HERO

Lovely neck and shoulders, well ribbed and excellent quarters resulting in good hind action. Not quite the head of some that stood over him today.

Class 10 Australian Bred Dog (Solid)

  1. Douglas’s BATHGATE HEAVENLY CHIMES

8 yr old red with a pleasant head, well boned and short and cobby – as a cocker should be! Moved OK

  1. Thomas’s JAYPED LIVINITUP

Good headed 6 year old black. Good neck and shoulders, well ribbed and good quarters. Did not really want to be here today!

Class 11 Open Dog (AOC)

Class of the day – full of quality animals.

  1. Royoni Kennel’s AUST GRD CH ROYONI HE’S TRUE BLUE

Simply divine! Wonderful head and eye, balanced length of neck into well placed shoulders, straight front with plenty of chest and heart room. Well developed rib and lovely hindquarters – this guy could do a day’s work!

He moves around the ring as if he owns it and is presented to perfection – Congratulations to all concerned on Dog CC and Best In Show!

  1. O’Keefe’s AUST GRD CH RYANGAYE RHYTHM N TIME

Another blue out of the top drawer. Lovely head and eye, great front and fabulous legs and feet. Well made throughout to good quarters which he used to move around the ring with drive. Presented in first class order. Res CC

Well made blue presented in very good condition. Lovely neck and shoulder placement, good rib and substance, moved well using his quarters to good effect.

  1. Royoni Kennel’s KENDALWOOD KITCHENER

Good headed dog with lots of quality. Well placed shoulders, short and cobby and well made quarters. Thought he needed more body and was erratic in front movement today but won this place on conformation.

Class 11 Open Dog (Solid)

  1. Dennis’s AM CH DAWNGLOW CINDERELLA MAN (Imp USA)

Well presented golden dog with a beautiful head and expression. Balanced neck into good shoulders, short and well ribbed, nice quarters, moved well. In great condition.

Class 12 Veteran Dog (AOC)

  1. Walker’s AUST GRD CH WARDOWN PLACE YOUR BETS

  1. Driscoll and Ball’s AUST CH CEILDIH YULE BRYNNER

Had considerably more coat than his namesake! Looked very well for his 12 years. Fabulous bone and substance to this dog, lovely head and expression and short cobby body.

  1. McFaddens’ BRADSTOCK MONTAGUE JAMES

Attractive tri-colour whose pedigree that I have now seen goes straight back to really old English breeding. Not quite the head of the other two here but a short cockery body, moved well on good legs and feet for his age.

Class 12 Veteran Dog (Solid)

  1. Carter & Mellet’s AUST CH SAGAPORE HOTDIGETHEREIAM

9 year old red in great condition. Good head, correct neck and shoulders, well ribbed, moved well and looked like he thoroughly enjoyed himself!

Very promising dark blue with a pretty head, good shoulders, lovely legs and feet and well made hind quarters which she used to advantage on the move.

  1. Gooding’s YUNBEAI STILL SHINING

Attractive blue, well made throughout, just not quite so confident as 1 on the day. These two should have some interesting battles in the years to come!

Blue with the best of heads and beautiful neck and shoulder. Good topline and rounded quarters. Not so mature as 1. Well presented.

  1. Kill’s BIFIELD KRACKS ME UP

Another blue with a lovely head and eye. Correct neck and shoulder and well ribbed, but something in her front conformation made her “dip” behind the shoulder which spoiled the outline. Moved well.

Class 2 Minor Puppy Bitch (Solid)

  1. Mcintyre’s MALEANDA EMILY SPIRIT

This was a tough decision but on the day this was the more finished picture. Pretty black, a real  lady! Nice head, correct neck and shoulders, well ribbed. Moved OK

  1. Britebay Kennel’s BRITEBAY BLACK WITCH

Lovely black puppy, needs to grow on and so could not beat 1 on the day, but if she does make the size she will be a star without doubt. Gorgeous head and softest of expression, good front, well boned and nice legs and feet. Very sound on the move but decided on the return that it was all too much for her today!!

Another feminine black with good neck and shoulders, well ribbed and with good legs and feet.

Class 3 Puppy Bitch (AOC)

Full of quality, I really loved this one and was tempted to award the Res CC, just needs a tiny bit more time. Lovely head, well balanced in front, good bone and lovely legs and feet.
